At the beginning of his six-year run in the state House, Perry shot down the notion that he might switch parties despite his conservative leanings that put him at odds with his party leaders. After former U.S. Rep. Kent Hance of Lubbock defected to the Republican Party in 1985, Perry told the Abilene paper he was “disappointed,” saying he planned to “change my party” rather than defect to the other side.

“I want the left hand side of the party to make the right hand side of the party comfortable,” Perry was quoted as saying. Hance, now chancellor of Texas Tech University, said he remembers telling Perry, “‘Good luck on it. I don’t think you can do it.' … And sure enough he couldn’t.’’

A group of British researchers believe warmer room temperatures are contributing to ballooning obesity rates.

The analysts, mostly England-based scientists, reported in an article, printed last month, in the journal Obesity Reviews that excessive exposure to warm indoor temperatures may cause us to lose the natural fat-burning tissue, known as brown fat that we activate when we’re cold.

It seems that all you need to do to drop a few pounds during the winter months is turn off the heat. Instead of cranking that central heating unit, you can try the following:
-Put on a sweater
-Run in place
-Snuggle with a buddy
-Cook something (I hear there's heat in the kitchen)

Generally speaking, boycotts are still a viable protest option, but they will only work best if demands are clear, concise and most importantly, achievable. In situations where the enemy is a massive conglomerate, it is best to forgo the boycott strategy and focus your energy, as well as dollars, on supporting political or social movements that are aligned with your convictions and can swing the political pendulum in the direction you want it to go.

Imagine if you woke up one day to find your blog had been renamed without warning by your hosting service and your user name given to someone else.  Or what if Twitter decided to give your username away?

According to IEEE Spectrum‘s Steven Cherry these things can happen. To find out how much ownership we really have over our online identities, Cherry interviewed technologist and journalist Tristan Louis on his weekly podcast who talked about what he learned after studying the Terms of Service agreements for sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Ironically, Louis told Cherry that if Twitter wanted to collect all of Cherry’s podcasts and sell them to the highest bidder, or take all of his tweets and put them into a book, it could legally do so. While Louis said Twitter’s TOS are actually very readable compared with other sites filled with legalese, its terms put Twitter, and not users, in control of content on the site.

Louis said Facebook, which is commonly blasted for its privacy policies, says it will at least alert users before moving them to another account name, as well as give them a right to challenge the decision.
